The rings are D-shaped. They only rotate along one axis of rotation, which prevents pinching of the corners of the lips. The flat side of the D-ring makes this bit more directional than an olive or ring snaffle. The double-jointed bit allows better relaxation of the horse's mouth. Indeed, unlike the single-jointed bit which acts on the palate which is a sensitive part of the horse's mouth, the double-jointed bit acts on the tongue without causing pain.
